Maria Leon Vasquez

Community Advocate and Education Leader

Originally from Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, Maria has been a resident of Santa Monica since 1959. She attended K-12 schools in Santa Monica, received an AA degree from Santa Monica College, a BA degree from U.C. San Diego and a JD degree from Hastings College of Law. Prior to her current role as a Career Pathway Specialist as SMC, Maria practiced law and worked for a housing nonprofit.


Maria has served on the SMMUSD board since 2000 and is proud of her accomplishments:

  •  Top-ranked public high schools.

  • Opportunity gap increase, 68% AP Participation

  • World renowned Visual & Performing Arts

  • Diversification with the addition of a Mariachi program

  • District-wide Equitable Fundraising


  • Passage of sales tax measures to generate crucial revenue for operating expenses and the passage of bond measures to upgrade aging schools

  • K-12 Social Justice Program

  • American Cultures/Ethnic Studies Program

  • Early Childhood program brought into the District to expand services to more families

  • Project Based Learning (PBL) pathway and campus established


  • Parent Engagement Framework adopted
